Eligibility checklist

Work through these five questions.

  1. 1Are you registered for Self Assessment as a sole trader or landlord?
  2. 2Add your gross self-employment and property income before expenses.
  3. 3Compare that figure with the threshold for the relevant test year.
  4. 4Check whether an exemption or special rule applies to your circumstances.
  5. 5Confirm your start date with HMRC even if you have not received a letter.

The qualifying-income test

Use gross income before expenses.

HMRC combines qualifying gross income from self-employment and property. The tax year used for the test is earlier than the date you are required to start.

Receiving no HMRC letter does not remove your responsibility to check whether and when the rules apply.
